Reasons why I always think of Edan when mentioning Courdek:
● They both are rather serious; you hear it in their voice, you feel it in their lyrics. Some go for terms like "conscious rap" to signify seriousness, yet "conscious rap" stands up for lots of awful things these days, so let's just call it "serious rap".
● Both are American, both Caucasian, yet both come from some very little-known rap scenes: the Boston vs. Phoenix area. While Boston still has Mr. Lif and Edo G. to flaunt about, Arizona seems as dry as the Egyptian desert.
● Both MCs are technical; they'd squeeze mad syllables into short bar measures, yet go for more personal content instead of mere battle rhymes. Subject matter can get highly introspective - delirious even, but never egocentric or too overtly "emo"; political, but not indecent; connections and metaphors is where it's at. Both passed through life, both having things to say, yet never preachers nor sermonizers; both feature choruses to songs.
● Both have that DIY attitude: writing their own rhymes, making their own beats, doing their own (awesome) artwork. Production-wise, it's all undoubtedly hip-hop, with just the right scratches, samples, boom-baps and loops, built on the usual format, yet never sounding stupidly classic, but equipped with a certain "musical" approach only specific to those which, like themselves, were formed by "real" instruments. Edan plays guitar, kazoo and theremin; Courdek is versed in piano, guitar, flute, organ, and others which today seem hip-hop-obsolete; at the same time enriching them with modern vocoders and sweet, subtle electronics. Hardly any complains. As for the visual, check for Courdek's submissions on deviantart.
● Both follow balance and consistency, no matter how varied and 'eclectic' it gets. "Simplicity driven by complexity is harmony", to quote from Courdek's MySpace.
There'd be other things as well, such as the concept of Synchronicity and who the hell else features on the album, but that you can find by simply adding a dot-com to the guy's name, and clicking the e-card. I rarely write that much in here anyway. Thanks to my French friends and Mapsadaisical for inspiration.
