How precious is the name Ginnungagap? If it wasn't taken by this band, then it would definitely be the name of my blog, or my record shop, or even my first born!! Southern Lord subdivision Latitudes purveys a series of unique recording sessions, inviting several friend-artists from different backgrounds (Grails, Sole & Pedestrian, Dälek, Shit & Shine, etc.) use their studio for ONE to TWO days most. The lovechild of Stephen O'Malley, Alexander Tucker, and Anthony Silvester (type of folks you always see mentioned on elitist websites), Ginnungagap is second in that series and you're right not to expect much, but maybe just got lucky. The sonics sure are nice: a great "sound of melting instruments" sort of vibe; plenty various acoustics, many of which seem Indian in origin (harmonium, tamboura...); all sloping in some thick shamanistic psychedelia, dark and rare, introspective, mystical (though unrelated to Buddha Bar compilations, sorry); one which really tugs at the heart strings if you're in the right mood; for resting, forgetting, going beyond, leaving behind, having those goose bumps... Phew. I fully approve. Best way to listen is actually half-conscious - make what you want out of that.
