Put simply, despite any suspicions one might have about the way these separate musical traditions fit together, it just works exceptionally well. Just as Madlib's access to the Blue Note catalog for his Shades of Blue album was a goldmine for a jazz fiend, Brian Harnetty was very pleased with the Appalachian collection that he rummaged through while at the Berea College in Kentucky, having full permission to use all original source material at hand. As justly remarked, Harnetty is "like a modern version of Alan Lomax", though he is not content to just catalog and present ancient American music; instead he's chosen to interact with it by creating collages and contemporary compositions. The way voices are mixed with sparse arrangements, the intimacy of it all, make a highly spiritual and highly recommended work.

ciao
that's one of my xmas gifts sorted! ta muchly
why he had to mess up the perfectly nice songs with little noises and minimal, oh-my-god-i-quite-honestly-can't-play- piano is beyond me altogether.
madlib, indeed. at least that one had made me dance.
quite honestly, i'm having troubles distinguishing between the albums you post. this music is like digital photography - quite overrated. and bland.
thanks for your kind opinion. i like this music and you don't - there could be lot worse things than that. i differentiate between it and you don't - fair enough again. just please, don't call it "overrated"/"bland". we have LOTS more relevant examples out there today... be they danceable or not.
i just thought this album was an unambiguously warm piece of music. sorry for not meeting your standards.
i'm sorry you took it so personal, i mean it's just me. it's not that i don't love this music, until not long ago it was the only thing that was still listenable to me. now it's not. and i'm not seeing the soulful, alive part in it anymore. it was more of a question than anything else - again, don't take it so personal.
no, really, forget it. as far as that goes, it's perfectly fine with me - there can be far more offensive things than someone not liking / being happy with everything i post here. it's something else that i thought was a bit malicious, but instead of ranting on your own rants, i will simply point out to the hundreds other music sources on the web, for a refreshing change. there's no point in arguing abt it.
It's beautiful and gives me the chills. I like this guy's taste and piano playing lots better than many players who are virtuosos. The combination of old and new textures is like an audio shadow-box.
