With the help of several guest musicians, Mathias Delplanque has just released a beautiful 3rd album under his civilian name. Fifteen introverted, upright songs, based upon acoustic instruments. Tiny, peaceful sounds combined with calm synthetic crackle, are put into a sort of improv setting. Delplanque is known for several dub-influenced projects, brought under the banner Lena; this, however, is completely different. Lovely melancholic cello, accordion strokes, occasional drum samples, sensitive piano playing and a few vocal samples make up for slow, pleasing melodies and glassy, fragile atmospheres. Many pieces are short, like brief scenes or sketches, but they work together to achieve cumulative impact. It may be more challenging to get a handle on Le Pavillon Témoin when it's so wide-ranging but, in the long run, the effort makes a lot of sense, and a stronger impression as a result.
