Terry Riley
A Rainbow in Curved Air
CBS 1969
01. A Rainbow in Curved Air [18:40]
02. Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band [21:40]
Terry Riley's in his 70s as well, and has gathered over 40 works, according to his page. At least that's not as prolifique as Mozart, or you really wouldn't know what's what. In any century and decade, parallel to mass directions, there've been little minds concocting new means, forms, styles... I think we all know the story. After In C, Rainbow in Curved Air is Riley's most associated title with early minimalism, next to equally important works of Steve Reich, Philip Glass and La Monte Young. People saw eventually a 'prophet', and maybe rightfully they did, but he was also, maybe above everything, the style's most widely recognized popularizer (some major labels contracts might've helped). Of course, there are other terms in circulation like "repetitive music", "meditative", "processed music", which have tried to pigeonhole it - I'd still go for either of them instead. Whether it qualifies for "minimalist" today remains debatable; sure is that Rainbow never wasted any time, least of the listener's. Simple and complex and refined - one of the sweetest albums ever.

Hey cookshop dude, just found you last night...some amazing stuff. I don't know if you read comments in the older posts (I been in your 'basement' all morning) so will just generally remark, REALLY enjoyed the 'loopy' ( ;-)) , music box, found, scratchy grammaphone, texture stuff...and listening to the Andrew Liles 'Black Hole' now, incredibly inspiring.
Thanks for all your efforts, I see you have had to struggle with file hosts (most 'sendspaces are dead) but even so your tasty musical picks have made it through and made it a better day so look forward to regular visits.
hey loopy.. don't you worry, i read every message posted just cause it comes straight to inbox.
really glad you liked that stuff - some people obviously don't. but i know that those who do are pretty blown away by it, so i'll keep pimping anyway.
problem with sendspace was about a month ago, when they decided to delete all 90 of my files in one shot. not much to do, except trying to back them up.. fortunately i've done that in advance, so some archives still work. some are very slow to download, but better than nothing eh.. if you've spotted any posts (except the really OLD ones) that got both links dead, i would like to know about them. can't be arsed to check myself - got over 200 entries here and trying to have a life as well.
feel free to dig and spread the word. support the artists that you think are special and come back with a comment whenever you like. gonna check your blog tomorrow - we seem to have a few things in common.
Very cool then, I will comment per post as I listen through because I am really enjoying some very specific albums.
I will keep at the 'troublesome' links also, who knows if it's a time of day thing or what but several are making me work at it! (and I do so want to hear that 'Jóhann Jóhannson IBM 1401, A User's Manual' but Axifile keeps saying it is an incorrect URL (Axifile wrong url (Jóhann Jóhannsson_IBM 1401, A User\'s Manual_2006.rar).txt) or just not doing anything, even though other Axifiles have worked fine...go figure).
So many gems already I feel greedy even wanting more! You got some great tastes bro, the Andrew Liles alone has got me on the cusp of springing for the whole 'Vortex' set ;-)
Hey btw, haven't I seen you around SFRP? Especially around certain NWW, laminal and microsound threads? ;-)
Hey bro, as per your request...
April was pretty savagesd by 'Depositfile', of the posts I was initially curious about, the following are gone:
Office-R(6)
Mundane Occurences and Presentations
The Village Orchestra
Et in Arcadia Ego
The Joe Beats Experiment
Indie Rock Blues [Mixed CD]
The Joe Beats Experiment
Indie Rock Blues [Mixed CD]
The Hermit
Code EP
Controller 7
Bumps [Mixtape]
Thomas Fehlman - Lowflow
Up-C Down-C - And The Battle Is Won
And apparently you deleted 'Bumps'?
No worries here, just that you asked for a report of any completly gone files. Again, thats for April. Don't be alarmed at the noises in the middle of the night, just me in your basement ;-)
Oh, I would say "storeandserve.com' likes you, that's the source of most the working links ;-)
yeah store&serve was good to still keep some of my files from last April.. not sure they're available for everyone though. the other links got deteled by themselves. must've been lack of traffic, or something.
i'll check the Johann Johansson link for you - could've expired as well. ideally, i would have all those links replaced and working, but it takes an awful lot of time with my connection. oh well, i'll see what i can do. thanks for your "curating" services so far!
and about SFRP - don't even know what that stands for. something i should check?
6 months in my everyday playlist. a perfectly fresh sound for 1969, dont you think so? I wish modern composers were as broadminded and talented as he was.
