This month we've gone through several works of NZ artists - Gydja, Swung, and Antony Milton - so to round things off I'll add a little extra special from the same space - an entirely different musical realm, or as someone else has put it: "There's no way on earth that you could pin down what Ray Off are doing in mere words. Their sound is way too complex and genre-bending to be placed in any existing field". Indeed, as with Volcano the Bear, you're not really thinking "band", but actually a "sound research team" making fun of fixed routines, mixing styles and formats as they like. For every track revealed, as many hidden levels to uncover; something truly diverse but which still somehow makes a lot of sense being placed next to each other. Brain-melting, really, in the wrongest way; a constant blur of instruments and sources, jamming native chants, guitar, piano, and various electronics in its loose collage-like technique. Clean & Dry Area demands repeated listenings to be fully understood, but on first play it's one the oddest treats in a while.
