When nothing vaguely new occurs in music, you get sick, like chewing food and spitting, or more-so like chewing rubber. But when something suddenly begins to steam, you're brought down right away to hundreds new associations, whose names you've never heard of. No great relief there, cause you'll have to be even more patient than before. At best, some more established artist lets out something new, intriguing. It just seems more likeable and reasonable like that. While I still haven't found the motivation to give the new Björk a proper listen, nor the new Cinematic Orchestra, RJD2, Chemical Brothers, etc., a few ones have appeared more promising: Antibalas, Alog, Arve Henriksen, Circle, Mike Tamburo, Blackshaw, Hala Strana... They all saught to 'reinvent' their old ways without playing safe or taking compromise, and who doesn't respect that. To appreciate the new Kemialliset, you'll have to treat it as a long-time friend (a "chemical friend"?), even if at your first encounter. You know when good friends play around and when they're serious, and how they don't have to over-explain things just to make a point. Instead, they'll go several points at once, and if you really follow all the way through and let them do their talking, you can then quietly and carefully adjust your monocle, take a puff out your pipe, and say "yes" or "no". In present case, it's neither a "yes" or "no" from me - simply the awareness of the fact that this particular friend will somehow always be a step ahead. And honestly, I only wish him to stay on like that. If it's for "the best" or "the worst" or "the most" or whatever, I can't tell, but I'll be proud of someone who constantly raises the bar. Even with the risk of feeling overwhelmed.
