01. Zeeg [37:07]
Announced by Brad Rose as "the best that the Dutch underground has to offer", a threesome effort led again by Mr. Zuydervelt aka Machinefabriek, who in about 5 years time will have collaborated with my mother too, if he keeps good shape. Right now he's pretty much on schedule, releasing every month, like normal menstruation. Three new LP's promised for the next 4 months, a couple more forthcoming 3-inches, a split 7-inch with Gareth Hardwick... Okay, so he won't be missed. Wouter has kept quiet for a while but following Ruststukken, there are plans on finally putting out Four Simple Songs for Five Dead Bumblebees, his second solo record. Finally (and mercifully), the trio's actual female member, Mariska Baars aka Soccer Committee, whom Rutger has already featured on a recent 3-inch, here contributes voice and 'gitaar', looped and manipulated, joined by Wouter's metallophone & tape recorders.
It's a solid session: simple, minimal, as stated in the press release. The three know each other and it shows, judging from this long, live (?) impromptu moment. "Most enchanting is how Zeeg manages to slow time to a near stand-still. The sounds and motifs unfold like a snail trapped in tar; each note, each sound seemingly more important than the previous". Zeeg stands for "sunk" in Dutch, and the word's abstract implications of finality are felt all over. You can hear these guys recording at the bottom of the ocean: ship down, but strangely, there's plenty of oxygen around.
