Marches of the New World
Grain of Sound 2007
01. Redemption Torture
02. Democracy
03. Oil Crows
04. Virgins Visions
05. Infinite March
Hammond organs have been often used in blues-rock 'cause of sounding smooth, organic. Medeski, Martin & Wood have used them, and even distorted them a little, but they've got nothing on David Maranha: the jazz/rock element to this essentially drone album takes it into a compleeetely different realm. Maranha's work with Minit as Organ Eye bore the first fruits of such an approach, and now, with the assistance of Joao Milagre (bass), Antonio Forte (drums), Tiago Miranda (percussion), and Helena Espvall (cello), sees to its further development. A great deal of emphasis is placed on tension and resolution, and these cadences, whether temporary or permanent, are focal points in New World's sonic pattern. In many pieces, ample room is made for cello and violin, but the biggest highlight remains undoubtedly the organ, with its deep, gritty, and invigorating tones. Methodological yet ritualistic; turbulent yet poised emotions. "To be played loud", as indicated on the sleeve.

Thx d! I am totally about to drop a Maranha Celebration post over at Diff.H2O, though it might take me a week to get it posted. I didn't know anything about this record, but the Organ Eye stuff was nice, so even if this is far afield, I know I'll dig it. Cheers
