Sapat is a Louisville-based eight-piece forged from the, uh, ashes of Valley of Ashes. Like that group, Sapat has a genetic predisposition for long, sun-staring guitar jams, the kind that build simply and slowly, like a star gathering matter in hopes of becoming a planet. Mortise and Tenon, their Siltbreeze debut, isn't all hairy instrumentals - there are a few folky ditties and sideways rockers too - but the strongest moments come when the band stretches its loose muscles out into infinity. 'Maat Fount' is the best example, a lumbering swing nurtured into a towering tree of sky-washing bliss. Numerous touchstones skip across the track's watery surface - the stoned haze of Pink Floyd and Bardo Pond, the circular jams of Amon Duul and No-Neck Blues Band, the mossy dreams of Neil Young and the Allman Brothers - but Sapat's woodsy accents add a nice little notch to the genre's well-worn totem pole.
