Still absorbing this new Plug Research release, but from first listen, this guy's really bringing mind-boggling stuff, beat-wise and any way you want it. The label calls him "a visionary" practicing some "next level shit"; at the same time insisting on his Coltrane roots (he is indeed Alice Coltrane's now famous nephew) to finally end up declaring him "Blade Runner, Bambaataa, The Bomb Squad and Basquiat" all in one (oh, "future Prince" as well). Simply selling it all as "robo-funk" would be too easy I reckon, just 'cause there's lots of subtlety, and most of all so much restraint, that you could actually start thinking of your Lipp/Dabrye/Who Dat? as fucking disco jams. The funk's still there, but never gets milked for immediacy - perfectly locked, yet perfectly bumpy and enjoyable for all its short 34-min life. Perhaps that's what's so mind-boggling about 1983 after all:
The groove is king and the groove is fucked up.
>> [soon replaced] (46mb)The groove is king and the groove is fucked up.
Thanks to Dameone.
