Clutchy, they say, "is a multi-instrumentalist who recorded under various pseudonyms throughout his entire musical career; his recorded output consists of everything from field recordings of his travels to avant compositions, to jazz to funk"... Travels? "From Bombay to Cairo". Specially notable, his stay in Japan, "under the tutelage of Rinzai Zen monks", where he investigated "silence and the rhythms of silence in music". Further on we have India and, err, Nigeria, where a fascination for drums was found, under another tutelage of "master-percussionist Oba-lu-Funke" (!). "During his stay there, he became a political revolutionary and gun-runner, and staged rebel missions to fight the oppressive government and its policies of Apartheid". Recently returned to the US, he produced his own music and created "instruments of his own", often collaborating with others, while "preferring to use a pseudonym or no name at all". Oh, and now: "It is said by locals who knew him that Clutchy Hopkins returned to the Mojave Desert to finish his life out living in an underground cave; no one has heard from him since".
Quite up to par with Buddy Wakefield's biography! And I don't care if it's all true or just well thought-out bollocks; the music is funky, jazzy, bumpy, and cool. With all the 'unexposure' of someone like Clutchy suddenly making such a record, maybe we could expect a small "cult" around him? Hmm - not until he dies first. Yeah...
