Renato Rinaldi
Hoarse Frenzy
Last Visible Dog 2005

01. Hoarse Frenzy [40:10]

One continuous 40-minute piece from Renato Rinaldi, previously known for his duo with Giuseppe Ielasi as "Oreledigneur" (three records on Bowindo, Fringes, and Fusetron). A completely gorgeous mix of "concrète" atmospherics (each instrument was recorded in a different setting; bird & wind sounds mix with ringing telephones, etc...), minimal prepared/processed acoustic guitar playing, harmonium drones, and muttered vocals; all coming from a mind-set not too far from the Jewelled Antler universe.

Largely connected to Andrea Belfi conceptually ("turning the house into a living creature"), as well as Fabio Orsi's 'long form' from yesterday. These new Italian artists can make some of the most singular, personal music - all you're asked is to open up and take it in. Now there's something remarkably real about Renato Rinaldo's recording. You can almost feel it breath on you. It captures and transforms generic ideas about space/environment in ways beyond the grasp of most people. It may and will alter limited notions of musicality and song structure. It may require volume or good pairs of headphones. And then... well... it may put a lump in your throat. I'm sad when it's over.
